5 Questions to ask before choosing a software development partner.
Whether you're a Seed-stage startup, preparing for Series A, or an established enterprise, the development partner you choose today can shape your bus...
One of the biggest mistakes I see in software development is teams trying to create new solutions to problems that have already been solved.
There is a reason established architectural patterns, engineering practices and security standards exist. They are the result of years of research, testing, refinement and lessons learned.
Yet I regularly encounter systems where developers have introduced unnecessary complexity by building custom solutions when proven alternatives were available.
The consequences often only become apparent later.
Authentication and cryptographic systems rely on carefully designed, mathematically verified and extensively tested approaches.
Introducing custom mechanisms because they seem more sophisticated or secure can unintentionally create vulnerabilities. I’ve seen this first-hand. A previous development team added a custom encryption layer on top of an existing one, using substandard practices that undermined the security the original layer was designed to provide.
The better approach is to use established, well-vetted security protocols and implementations rather than inventing your own.
Before designing something from scratch, ask:
Good engineering isn’t about creating something new at every opportunity. It’s about knowing when to use what’s already been proven, and when a genuinely custom solution is justified.
At Protium, we believe the right technical decisions start with understanding the problem, selecting the right architectural design principles and patterns that are fit for purpose, and building foundations that support the business as it evolves.
Innovation matters. But innovation for its own sake shouldn’t come at the expense of reliability, security or maintainability.
Sometimes, the smartest engineering decision is knowing which wheel not to reinvent.
