Freelance Marketing & Content Lead
Contractor / Freelance — modest retainer + project work
What is the role?
Protium is looking for a freelance marketing partner to help get our brand in front of more of the right people. The role is part-time and project-based, with a small base retainer, and the work spans both strategy and hands-on production — content planning, social posts, blog support, founder-led video, and brand-building activity.
You’ll work closely with founders and leadership to shape how Protium shows up online — from one-off campaigns to the steady drumbeat of weekly content. We need someone who can think strategically about where to play and how to win attention, and roll up their sleeves to make the actual posts, reels, and assets that go out.
We’re written for an individual freelancer, but small agencies and studios are welcome to apply. If you bring a tight team of collaborators (an editor, a designer, a producer), that’s fine — we care about output and predictability, not how the sausage is made.
About Protium
Protium is a security-first software development company based in Claremont, South Africa.
We build robust, scalable, future-proof software with a strong emphasis on engineering standards, clean delivery, practical architecture, and long-term maintainability.
Our work is primarily focused on building high-quality software systems for clients in the financial services sector (but not limited to). We have a clear technical voice and a maturing brand, and we’re ready to invest in getting it in front of more people.
Working model
- Fully remote
- Contractor / freelance — modest monthly base retainer for a steady cadence of content, with additional project work billed on top
- Cape Town preferred but not required — useful for in-person shoots, founder interviews, or strategy workshops
- Async-friendly — clear briefs, clear deliverables, clear feedback loops
- Individuals or small agencies both welcome to apply
About you
You’re a marketer who holds both ends of the work: the strategy (what should we be saying, to whom, on which channels, and why) and the execution (writing the post, editing the reel, shipping the asset). You don’t hand off the thinking, and you don’t outsource the doing.
You have strong instincts for B2B brand and content marketing. You know how to take a technical company’s voice and turn it into content that resonates with a real audience. You understand the difference between vanity metrics and engagement that actually moves the needle.
You take a brief, ask sharp questions, and deliver work that doesn’t need to be art-directed line by line. You’re comfortable working with founders — listening for the real story underneath what they’re saying, and turning that into content that doesn’t sound like every other post on the feed.
What you’ll do
The exact mix will shape itself over time. Expect work across:
- Social content — LinkedIn posts, Instagram posts and reels, content calendars, scheduling, and community engagement
- Blog support — editorial planning, light editing, distribution and amplification of pieces written by the team
- Founder-led video — including our upcoming “Tech in Traffic” series: shaping concepts, planning episodes, and supporting production
- Video interviews & long-form content — concept, planning, and packaging interviews with team members, clients, and partners
- Brand & promotional campaigns — one-off campaigns tied to launches, events, or moments
- Channel strategy — recommending where to invest, where to pull back, and how to measure what’s working
- Light, useful reporting — on what’s working so we can keep tightening the loop
Requirements
- A strong track record in B2B content and brand marketing, with examples we can see (case studies, portfolio links, channels you’ve grown, content you’ve shipped).
- Comfort across strategy and execution — you can both plan the quarter and write the post.
- Hands-on capability with LinkedIn and Instagram content production (posts, reels, captions, scheduling).
- Strong writing in a professional, technical-adjacent voice — clean prose, no fluff, no LinkedIn-bro tropes.
- Experience working with founders or leadership to develop a clear, consistent voice.
- Reliable communication and predictable turnaround times. We don’t need 24/7 availability, we do need predictability.
- Comfortable collaborating through shared tools (Notion, Drive, Figma, scheduling tools, etc.) — tool-agnostic, judged on output.
- Based in South Africa or able to work effectively in South African time zones.
Nice-to-have (not required)
- Cape Town based — useful for in-person shoots, founder interviews, or strategy workshops.
- Experience marketing technical, B2B, financial services, or professional services companies.
- Video production experience — shooting, editing, or producing short-form and long-form video content.
- Founder-led marketing experience — building presence around a founder or technical leader.
- Paid social or paid amplification experience.
- Light design capability for quick on-brand asset production (we have a separate freelance designer for heavier work).
- Familiarity with podcast or interview-series production.
Compensation
A modest monthly base retainer for an agreed minimum cadence of content and activity, with additional project work billed on top at agreed project or hourly rates. Specifics agreed on the intro call once we understand scope and fit.
Hiring process (what to expect)
- Portfolio / capabilities review — share examples of work, channels you’ve grown, or campaigns you’ve run
- Short intro call — get-to-know-you, scope the retainer, talk about how you like to work
- Optional: small paid trial project — a real piece of work at agreed rate so we can see how we work together before any longer-term engagement
We aim to keep the process light and respectful of your time.
How to apply
Send us:
- a link to your portfolio, case studies, or examples of content you’ve shipped (essential — we hire on output)
- a short intro about how you like to work, the kinds of clients or projects you’re best suited to, and your typical availability
- your rates or rate expectations (retainer baseline + project rates, hourly, or however you usually structure engagements)
- if you’re an agency or small studio, a short note on your team setup and which pieces of the work you’d handle in-house vs subcontract
